At the Francis Beidler Forest and Silver Bluff ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ sanctuaries, volunteers assist with trail maintenance, habitat restoration, native plantings, events, and education. These roles are ideal for those who enjoy the outdoors and want to learn more about local ecosystems. 

Protect vulnerable beach-nesting birds like Wilson’s Plovers, American Oystercatchers, and Least Terns by becoming a Shorebird Steward. Volunteers monitor nesting sites, engage beachgoers, and ensure chicks have the space they need to survive. 

Support birds in your neighborhood by helping us build bird-friendly communities through native planting projects. Join garden workdays or help restore native habitat at schools, public spaces, and sanctuaries. Even small patches of native plants provide vital food and shelter for birds like the Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Brown Thrasher, and Northern Cardinal. 

Help track and protect birds through hands-on science:

• Climate Watch: Survey species affected by climate change. Counters need in SC!

• Christmas Bird Count: Join the nation’s longest-running bird survey. 

• International Shorebird Survey (ISS): Help gather information on Shorebirds and the wetlands they depend on. 

• Great Backyard Bird Count: Report your sightings during the GBBC.

• Banded Bird Reporting: Submit sightings to understand bird movements and survival. 

• Oyster Catcher Band Re-sighting: Look for and report banded Oyster Catchers on wintering sites.  

Speak up for birds and the environment. Become an advocate to help advance policies that protect habitat and fight climate change. 

We welcome volunteers with all kinds of skills. Whether you can build, repair, organize, or support, there’s a place for you in our work. Help us maintain facilities and trails, support staff at events, assist with data entry or outreach, or contribute your talents in photography, writing, design, carpentry, tech support, and more. Whatever your strengths, we can put them to work for birds.
