Bringing Back Bobolinks

New England’s fields come alive each spring with the bubbly, robotic calls of the Bobolink. This charismatic bird species has been in decline since the 1900s, primarily due to loss of habitat. Bobolinks and other grassland birds are vulnerable when fields are hayed or grazed because they nest on the ground.

works across northern New England and New York to support farmers and landowners in adopting bird-friendly haying practices. Landowners receive economic assistance to alter their mowing schedules, giving Bobolinks and other grassland nesting birds the time they need to raise their young. ̽��ѡ biologists visit enrolled fields to monitor grassland bird populations and provide science-backed habitat management recommendations. The Bobolink Project and our other regional partnerships work to stabilize and ultimately reverse the decline of grassland birds.
